A1 Leeming to Barton Improvement Scheme: Phased Opening
I am writing to let you know that we plan to open the second phase of the major upgrade to the A1 to motorway from junction 51 Leeming to junction 56 Barton to traffic next week. From Monday 26 February, a four mile section of the A1 starting 2 miles south of Scotch Corner interchange and continuing to junction 56 Barton will become a three-lane motorway. The current speed restrictions will be lifted and drivers will benefit from the extra capacity and improved road information to help keep traffic flowing smoothly. Weather conditions can sometimes affect our work, but we’ll do everything possible to get the road open on-time. By opening this section ahead of the final length we are able to release the benefits of the scheme to our road users as well as reducing the remaining length of roadworks. Our focus will now concentrate on the remainder of the project including works on the Scotch Corner interchange and finalising slope work at Fort Bridge. This will lead us to our next major milestone which will be the completion of works at Scotch Corner interchange and opening the final phase of motorway upgrade between junction 52 Catterick running over the River Swale to meet the motorway north of Catterick in March 2018. Once finished, the full scheme between Leeming and Barton will complete the missing link of motorway between London and Newcastle, using the M1 and A1 (M), as well as improving journey times and increasing safety. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued patience and support whilst we deliver our works.
